Karst Areas
Bay Area Wild: A Celebration of the Natural Heritage of the San Francisco Bay Area by Galen A. Rowell, The San Francisco Bay Area holds the most extensive system of wild greenbelts of any major metropolitan area in the world. More than 200 parks, preserves, and other protected areas can be found within forty miles of the city. Together, they exceed Yosemite National Park in size, biodiversity, and visitation. With stunning photography and thoughtful text, this book is the first to celebrate these separate national, state, regional, county, local, and private entities as a whole. Galen Rowell's books about wild places enjoy wide appeal because he reveals--in images and words--the essential nature of his subjects. The 172 photographs in this book--of rugged coasts, wild animals, redwood forests, wildflower meadows, oak woodlands, river deltas, bay wetlands, and mountain ranges--are every bit as evocative as images that lure travelers to far corners of the earth. Working with Rowell to create this stunning collection of images was award-winning photographer Michael Sewell, another Bay Area native. Sewell has spent years photographing Bay Area wildlife, using a combination of remote cameras triggered by infrared beams and Native American animal calls to record elusive creatures at close range in their natural habitat. Often working together in the field, Rowell and Sewell spent two years completing their coverage of Bay Area wildlands, wetlands, and waters. Spectacular photographs and Galen Rowell's rich descriptions of magnificent Bay Area landscapes, as well as interviews with the men and women who were instrumental in preserving them, combine to make "Bay Area Wild an unforgettable celebration of these unique national treasures.
Exploring Colorado's Wild Areas: A Guide for Hikers, Backpackers, Climbers, X-C Skiers & Paddlers by Scott S. Warren, Discover 69 wilderness areas--including seven new ones--showcasing everything from mountains to canyons, rushing rivers to desert landscapesA comprehensive guide to Colorado's wild areas Totally updated and revised Includes 74 maps and 90 photosMuch has changed in the landscape of Colorado's wilderness designations since the first edition of this book appeared in 1992. At the newly designated Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, visitors peer into the depths of this narrow canyon that drops 2,000 feet to the Gunnison River below--and some choose to follow rugged backcountry routes down to the inner canyon. A trail in Spanish Peaks Wilderness, established in 2000, leads up one of these twin sentinels that rise above the edge of the high plains. Nestled at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and standing up to 750 feet high, the dunes of the newly enlarged Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Preserve are the tallest in the Western Hemisphere. Other recent additions to Colorado's protected lands include the Castle Peak Wilderness Study Area, Bull Gulch Wilderness Study Area, San Luis Hills Wilderness Study Area, and Demaree Canyon Wilderness Area. Colorado is one of the nation's primary adventure-travel destinations, and both visitors and locals will find this book the most all-inclusive reference available to the state's wildness areas. From the state's high peaks to its spectacular canyons and deserts, Exploring Colorado's Wild Areas provides detailed information on seasons, flora and fauna, geology, history and activities.

Cave digging - Since most of the obvious caves have already been discovered and explored, cavers must search the mountains and valleys in "cave country" (or karst) for new caves. This is most commonly accomplished while ridgewalking, the practice of scouring the country-side, in areas with cave potential, for new, previously undiscovered openings to the underground. Turlough (lake) - Turlough (Irish Gaelic "dry lake") is a seasonal lake found in Irish karst (exposed limestone) areas. They fill with water via underground tunnels between autumn and spring.
